This is the story of Niamh and Chris, who travelled from the UK to tie the knot at Markree Castle in County Sligo. While Chris, an ornithologist, hails from the UK, Niamh grew up in Ballisodare, Co Sligo, just 15 minutes away from the Castle. They even brought their dog, Basil, who accompanied them on the ferry and behaved impeccably throughout the journey. I believe he even enjoyed the adventure.
Sligo Wedding Photography
Chris and his groomsmen prepared in Sligo town on the morning of the wedding, planning to arrive at Markree Castle by midday. I joined them in the castle’s downstairs basement, where they spent a relaxed morning getting ready. Matthew, the best man, was tasked with the ironing duties. Not far away, in Ballisodare, Niamh was with her bridesmaids. She returns home from the UK two or three times a year, and this time, some of her friends, who had never been to Ireland, joined her. The excitement was palpable.
Dog-Friendly Wedding Venue
Markree Castle is great for accomodated dogs, so Basil was invited as ring bearer!
Wedding at The Chapel at Markree Castle
The ceremony was held at 2:30 pm in the castle’s old de-consecrated chapel. Capturing Niamh ascending the stairs was a highlight, as the moments were filled with beauty and chaos. The ceremony featured a wonderful celebrant and included the traditional tying of the knot, which was a beautiful touch. Following the ceremony, the couple had a brief receiving line before we took a short walk for some portrait shots. We were away for no more than five minutes before returning to the guests. Niamh and Chris wanted to spend time relaxing with their friends and family, and it was a pleasure for me to capture candid shots throughout.
Wedding Speeches on the Stairs in Markree Castle
At 5:30 pm, they delivered some speeches on the stairs, with plans for more to follow the meal. Niamh’s reactions during these moments were particularly memorable. We had intended to take a large group photo outside, but the weather had other plans. The bride and groom were unfazed and decided to skip it.
Wedding Food at Markree Castle
After dinner in the Grand Hall, the final speeches took place, and then everyone moved downstairs for the dancing. The transition from the elegant banqueting room to the dance floor below was seamless, a feature of Markree Castle I have always admired. The Buck Taylor band provided the evening’s soundtrack. I stayed for the first 30 minutes of dancing before taking my leave, the dance floor buzzing with energy as I departed.
