Shane’s Story
There has been a camera in Shane’s hand for over 30 years. Since he was a ten-year old boy.
He’s always surrounded himself with books of the greats – like Martin Parr, Bruce Gilden and Diane Arbus – who’ve helped shape the way he sees the world.
But it was at Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design that Shane really had the chance to get his teeth into documentary photography – spending two weeks documenting the binmen of Waterford.
He became hooked on the idea of the unposed and undirected.
The images had so much more life to them – a natural depth and beauty. Full of unforced, subtle details.
Then in 2005, he was approached by a friend to shoot their wedding. And he offered Shane free rein to photograph it in his own unique way.
Shane approached the wedding without any pre-determined list of images to record.
Just as a guest, with a camera – focused on capturing the joy, fun and experiences of the day as it naturally unfolded around him.
The images were a phenomenal success.
They instantly resonated with anyone who saw them. They perfectly encapsulated what it was like to be part of the day – transporting those photographed back to exactly how they felt in those moments.
And from there the phone has never stopped ringing.
Today, Shane lives in Waterford in, Ireland, with his wife Aoife, children Marnie and Miles, and the not-to-be-forgotten Doug, The Frenchie.
He considers himself extremely lucky to have to the opportunity to travel from there, to some of the most spectacular locations nationally and internationally, to document a couple’s days.
In his own unique style.
For Shane, it’s definitely a find something you love to do and never work a day in your life kind of a thing.
And his passion, curiosity and playful outlook on life, shines through in everything he does.
