Liz and Nick’s Charles Fort Wedding Day
Liz, originally from Cork, met Nick in Melbourne, Australia. This is where the two of them set up home. They had two beautiful kids, twins, who were two years old on the day they were married. when they got in touch originally, the couple told me they wanted the images to have a sense of energy and a candid nature. They really wanted a natural look on all their images, to have something that they could look back on in years to come and remember how the day looked and felt.
Cork Wedding Photographer
Everything kicked off that morning at Liz’s house in Cork City. One thing I absolutely love as a wedding photographer is when something non-traditional happens. And it did this morning. Liz and Nick got ready in the same house and didn’t try to hide from each other. Their family’s left to catch the bus to Kinsale while they finished getting dressed. Nick helping Liz into her dress were some of my favourite photographs of the day.
The Wedding Venue; Charles Fort Kinsale
Charles Fort in Kinsale is an incredible place to get married. It’s quite popular for bridal portraits outside. But I’ve never been in there that deep, at least. It’s an OPW site so I have to produce my full public liability insurance in advance. But other than that, everything was plain sailing. It’s a terrific vantage point to look back out over Kinsale, the harbour and all the sail ships coming and going all day long. The warm breeze coming up off the ocean was smashing. All of these conditions combined made it feel like a daydream when I think back of it.
Wedding Ceremony in the Gunpowder Room
The ceremony happened in the Gunpowder Room in front of all the guests with some outside, giving it that extra special sense of occasion. The twins were terrific during the ceremony and added a nice atmosphere to the occasion. Liz and Nick didn’t try to let them sit in a corner. They were happy for them to be right in the middle of the action and it made the images all the more special.
Portrait Session at Charles Fort Kinsale
Once the ceremony was complete we hung around for a while outside. It’s a playground for children and adults alike. Everyone had a great time just mixing and mingling around. Most of the guests got back on the bus and headed into Cork City. We stayed on with the families to get those portraits out of the way. We had a 15-minute impromptu couple session. They were plenty of locations around and the light was fantastic. A dream to shoot in.
The Bulman Pub Wedding Photos
The plan was to follow everybody back into Cork, being in a car, just about get there at the same time as they arrived on the bus. But I made a suggestion and that was to pull into the Bulman pub for a quick pint and give them 15 minutes to themselves to decompress and take it all in. Even though we were lower to the water, the views over Kinsale Harbour were amazing.
Jacobs on The Mall Wedding Reception
After that we headed to Cork where the couple did another thing that not a lot of people do that I absolutely love. They had their reception in a restaurant. That restaurant was Jacob’s on the Mall. They really made a huge effort for the drinks reception and for dinner afterwards. Nick made a special request. He always wanted sushi as part of the canapés and the restaurant Julie obliged. They were delicious. Dinner was at 6:30 and just before which the kids were whisked away with a babysitter for the night, freeing mum and dad up for a night of partying. They had starters, the main course, and then had their speeches, which were beautiful, and the setting of Jacob’s with the huge ceiling and low light was really nice for them.
Traditional Irish Wedding Band
Dancing wasn’t exactly formal but the plan was to have some Irish music and try and make a session out of it for the Aussies. It worked a treat. The band Sin a Deir Sí duly obliged. There was lots of sweat and Guinness on the dance floor as I was leaving. A perfect day.
